The 16-19 Study Programme

The government policy on 16-19 study programmes can be found here. It covers academic and vocational study programmes and applies to all providers of 16 to 19 education in England.

The study programme for each student should provide a structured and challenging learning programme that supports their development and progression in line with their career plans. At SFH6 we plan the study programme carefully with each student to ensure that they are tailored to their needs but they typically include the following:

  1. Substantial qualifications that stretch students and prepare them for education at the next level or for employment. Our offer includes a wide range of A Levels, Level 3 BTECs and Level 2 BTEC courses. The coursing of each student will be informed by their prior attainment, interests and career ambitions. All students at SFH6 are enrolled on a full time course which is typically 3 A Levels or the equivalent.
  2. English and mathematics GCSE where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade 4. Maths may also offer Level 2 Functional Skills where appropriate. Students are enrolled onto these courses following their GCSE results
  3. Work experience to give students the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions. At SFH6 all students take part in a week of Work Experience in Year 12. Students on vocational courses will often have additional Work Experience opportunities as part of their course
  4. Other non-qualification activity to develop students’ character, broader skills, attitudes and confidence, and to support progression. All students at SFH6 are part of a tutor group and have a timetabled tutor lesson each week. This programme is planned to provide students with a range of knowledge and skills to support them to become active citizens and confident young adults ready to move on to the next stage in their lives. We also provide a full careers programme across the year which includes a drop down ‘Futures Week’, regular careers talks and access to a Careers Advisor on site. In addition to this we provide a range of enrichment activities.
