A Level Psychology (AQA)

Year 12

 During the Year 12 students study a variety of psychological areas including: Memory, Attachment, Psychopathology, Social influence, Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology and research methods used in psychological investigations. 

Year 13

 Paper 1: written exam 2 hours covering Social influence, Memory, Attachment and Psychopathology.

 Paper 2:  written exam 2 hours covering, Approaches in Psychology, Biopsychology and research methods.

 Paper 3: written exam 2 hours.  Compulsory topic: Issues and debates in psychology

Optional content 1 (You will study one from the following) 

• Relationships
• Gender
• Cognition and development

Optional content 2 (You will study one from  the following

• Schizophrenia
• Eating behaviour
• Stress

Optional content 3 (You will study one from the following)

• Aggression
• Forensic psychology

Why Study?

A high proportion of psychology students’ progress to University courses in general psychology or a specialised field as diverse as Forensic Psychology or Sports Psychology. Psychologists work in many different areas such as criminal psychology or occupations in education, media, law, health and counselling. Psychology is the investigation of human thought and behaviour.

What Our Students Say  

My favourite topic within psychology A level course is ‘Approaches to Psychology’ in which we learnt in more detail about different perspectives of our behaviour. The argument of whether Psychology should be considered a science and be measured empirically interested me providing there were good reasons for both sides. My advice for anyone who chooses this course is to be open-minded and be willing to engage or even just listen in to discussions. Your class is similar to a small community, and you should feel comfortable expressing your thoughts and ideas. A teacher is a student’s confidant, so I would suggest asking as many questions as you need to further develop your understanding and interests.  

Entry Requirements:  Grade 6 in English Language or Literature and a 5 in Maths or Science. Grade 6 in Psychology if taken.
