Music

This is a practical based course where you develop skills, knowledge and understanding of working in the music industry sector as well as developing your composition and performing skills. Work is assessed through coursework which can include a range of evidence such as video and audio examples and two exams.

The course is the equivalent to 1 A level  

Students taking this qualification will study three mandatory units: 

• Unit 1: Practical Music Theory and Harmony- learn the basics of reading and writing music and composing and arranging music. Internally assessed through coursework
• Unit 2: Professional Practice in the Music Industry- Explore what it is that makes someone a professional in the music industry and how to put forward a bid for work. Externally assessed through a written exam which takes places across 2 weeks
• Unit 3: Ensemble Music Performance- Rehearse and perform as part of a group – Externally assessed through a practical exam which takes place from January to May

One optional unit is then chosen which is internally assessed through written and practical tasks

Unit 4: Composing Music – Learners explore composing music from the initial stages to the final product, developing skills for composition in a variety of styles

Unit 5: Solo Performance. Learners explore the preparation and performance of music as a soloist before performing in front of an audience

Unit 6: Performance session styles- Learners explore a range of different styles of music and learn how to perform in these styles

Unit 7: Improvising Music- Learners develop the ability to improvise when performing in a range of musical styles and contexts
