A Level Geography (OCR)

Year 12   

During Year 12, students will develop their ability to engage with material and topics to A-Level standard. Over the course of Year 12, students will apply these developing skills to the following units: 

• Coastal Landscapes.
• Changing Spaces,
• Making Places,
• Disease Dilemmas,
• Power and Borders.

Year 13  

Year 13 builds on the topics studied in Year 12 and broadens the scope of study to include the following topic areas:  

• Earth’s Life Support Systems
• Hazardous Earth. Independent fieldwork investigation  

Assessment   Three exam papers and a coursework-based investigation based on independent research

Why Study?

Statistics show that compared to other subjects Geography graduates are among the most employable. This is likely because they possess a wide range of transferable skills that employers look for. Further to this, A-Level Geography encourages students to critically consider information from a broad range of sources. This developing ‘geographic literacy’ is a fantastic skill for students to have as they begin to engage with higher education, the workplace and the wider global community. At A-Level, Geography is a combination of many aspects of the discipline, including geophysics, sociology, geopolitics, climatology, international relations and oceanography. Through these studies, SFH6 Geography students are prepared to undertake further, related, study at degree-level. Not only this, but through the study of ALevel Geography the doors to many different career options are opened, such as:  resource management, geophysics, town planning, conservation, government, leisure management, education, journalism, politics, and International development.
